Thanks to Tuscan Sun Festival, and the movie " Under the Tuscan Sun ", Cortona, has been increasingly strengthening its carrying capacity and is today one of the towns of Tuscany better prepared to welcome tourists from all over the world each year come to visit the village.
If you find yourselves among the lucky ones who will visit Cortona during a stay in Tuscany, worth the climb to the city a couple of hours before dusk to visit the hermitage of San Francisco previously spoken of in another post.
Once Eremo visited and enjoyed this place of peace and serenity, you can retrace your steps and park at the gates of the city.
Cortona has 3 areas to park, the closest to Eremo is usually the most comfortable but depending on the day for parking in this area is often difficult.
The walk can be done safely in an hour, because the town is very small, yet if you have time I recommend a visit to the Etruscan museum of the city where you can see one of the most beautiful collections of Etruscan art in Italy and learn a little about the history of this fantastic place.
If you have time for a snack (in Italy are usually made from 7 to 8 pm) I recommend a drink in the Bar Saletta (historical site of the city). For those wishing to dine in Cortona there are several places where you can enjoy traditional food such as Osteria del Teatro but unfortunately, as often happens in both areas of tourism, low quality and prices rise.
For lovers of night life, Cortona offers musical evenings in the Pub Route 66 where you can find mostly Italian and American art school that is in the same people who want to enjoy the nightlife of the city.
In conclusion I would point elsewhere in a longer visit should be visited:
- Chiesa di Santa Magherita;
This church is located on the highest point of the city to get there, follow the directions and need to drive. This beautiful sanctuary built in the thirteenth century surely deserves a visit, not only because the picture can be seen from the square, but also inside it, the photos you see below:
-Chiesa di San Francesco
built by Fra Elia in 1247, the same friar who built the basilica of St. Francis in Assisi (also worth a visit), much more baroque than the previous one is built on ancient Roman baths.
- Cortona Archaeological Park
Archaeological Park City also worth a visit as it is well maintained and a good guide can come to understand life , customs and art of the pre Romanesque people who lived in this area of \u200b\u200bTuscany before the Romans.
As always I hope it can help you to plan your vacation,
Sincerely
G.
